Research has found that the antioxidant lycopene (found in tomato products) can provide the sun protection. The study results were published in the British Journal of Nutrition on December 23, 2002 (ok so why did I just read this in a June 2006 issue of Natural Awakenings?). The "dosage" is suggested as either eating tomato paste or drinking a tomato drink (I guess V8) in enough quantities to provide 20 milligrams of lycopene. The study's volunteers drank 2 eight-ounce glasses (250 ML). Thats not too bad. But who wants to drink tomato juice before going in the sun? Not very refreshing.
The article I learned this from doesn't say anything about how long 2 glasses will last you. It probably doesn't totally prevent skin cancer anyway. Stick to the SPF 15 lotion. But I guess if you are ever stranded on a desert island with tomato plants...you know how to improvise!
